What is TMJ syndrome and treatment?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is an often crippling disorder that can leave patients with near daily pain and headaches on the sides of the face and temple. TMJ syndrome results in joint damage, ground down teeth, worn down enamel, and can lead to the need for costly dental work and appliances. But, treatment does exist to treat the root cause, muscle spasm, which can alleviate symptoms. Neuromodulators such as Botox and Xeomin can be used to break this cycle and leave you pain free. TMJ syndrome is also known as TMD or Temporomandibular disorder.

How does TMJ syndrome treatment work?

When delivered to the correct jaw muscle, neuromodulators can prevent spasm and reduce the tension that contributes to TMJ syndrome. As a result this can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with TMJ syndrome. Also, because most patients with TMJ syndrome have thickened or hypertrophied muscles, it can also slim the shape of the face as these muscles become relaxed and return to normal function.

Previous to the use of medications such as Botox and Xeomin, treatment for TMJ syndrome typically consisted of dental appliances which can protect teeth but do not prevent painful spasms that can still deteriorate the joint. With the spasm controlled, in addition to reducing pain and discomfort, tooth enamel and joint damage can be prevented as well.

Advantages to this treatment include that it is non-surgical, may reduce or eliminate the need for dental appliances, and other functions such as speaking, swallowing, and biting are not affected. It can also reverse or minimize lock jaw for patients experiencing more severe symptoms of TMJ syndrome. Additionally, neurotoxins may work longer in patients treated for spasm, than for other indications, meaning it is possible to experience a longer period of relief than typical from these medications.

What to Expect After Treatment

Treatment to the masseter and related muscles takes a few minutes to complete and most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two weeks of their first treatment. Treatment results then last for several months or longer.
